How does a person come to cause harm, and what role do we play in creating the conditions for that harm to happen? Elizabeth Vartkessian works as a mitigation specialist, a little-known profession inside criminal defense. Her job is to help others (prosecutors, judges, juries, the community) see her clients, who are usually accused of or convicted of murder, as fully human. In that process, she carries out three generations of investigation to uncover the known and invisible forces that shape the trajectory of a life. In this session, Vartkessian will talk about her work, her new book and what is needed to ensure that less harm takes place in our communities. Texas Tech's national literary magazine, Iron Horse Literary Review, will offer free copies of Liz's book to participants.

How does DNA reshape our understanding of ancestry, colonial society, and identity in the Americas? In this course, we will explore the science and methodology of genetic genealogy through the lens of first contact between European and Indigenous peoples. Using the New Mexico DNA Project as a central case study, we will examine how Y-DNA and mitochondrial DNA can confirm, complicate, and challenge traditional research. Topics include Y-DNA Adam, Indigenous maternal haplogroups, the Spanish castas system, and colonial identity. We will consider the ethical and political implications of DNA testing and the limits of what genetic evidence can, and cannot, reveal about race and belonging.

In this course, we will explore the history, cultural meaning, and enduring appeal of Route 66. Together, we will examine its origins, rise and decline, late-20th century revival, the role of nostalgia and car culture, preservation efforts, and the possible futures of this iconic highway.

Lubbock’s plan for educating citizens became a model for towns and cities across the nation. "He Walked by Night" (1948) is a film noir thriller based around true events and case files. It features Jack Webb of "Dragnet" fame in one of his first acting roles. The LAPD is after a killer who continues to elude them. The movie has been called a “thrilling, absorbing story, superbly told, well-acted [and] brilliantly photographed” (The Hollywood Reporter). Other actors in the film include Richard Basehart, Roy Roberts, Whit Bissell and James Cardwell. Done in a documentary type style, the film presents an exhilarating plot, beautiful cinematography and fine acting. Come enjoy this film as it is a thriller like nothing else.

In this course, we will trace the evolution of the courts from their English roots to their formal establishment in the Constitution. We will explore how the Supreme Court, lacking the power of the purse or military, derives its authority from its ability to connect with the people of the US and protect democracy. We will examine creation of the federal judiciary and the power of the Marshall Court, the Court’s evolution through the New Deal, the Vinson Court, the Warren Court’s “Rights Revolution,” and the role of today’s US Supreme Court.

In 1995, St. John Paul II (Pope 1978-2005) wrote a Letter to Women for the UN World Conference on Women, referring to the "feminine genius.” In 1921, a woman writer for The New York Sun described sculptor Anna Huntington’s bronzes as "objects...one naturally associates with the feminine genius.” Examining artworks on view alongside Renaissance images of the Blessed Virgin Mary—the most iconic woman in art for 17 centuries—we will explore what is meant by this intriguing phrase used more than half a century apart. Then, we will look closely at Huntington’s bronze to consider what the critic saw in 1921 that so naturally suggested the genius of woman.
